HOW (NOT) to Email InstructorsSpring 2020Chances are, you will need to email your professors at some point in your college career. Unfortunately, that simple process can be frustrating for everyone. Sometimes, no response is given. Other times, it comes too late. Often, several emails are needed for a simple question. How can you avoid this? Try our tips for effective email communication.
Consider this email: Please respond ASAP! <[email protected]> To: Professor Smith Hey, can u tell me, did we do anything today joe Here, the professor has no idea who is writing or what class Joe is talking about. This will require two more emails just to figure out what's going on. Also, for a hard-working professional like your instructor, this question may be offensive. Try this instead: Question about English 101 assignment <[email protected]> Dear Dr. Smith, I am in your Comp. I class on Mondays and Wednesdays at 11, and I have a question about the research paper that is due next week. Is the paper due on Monday or Wednesday? Also, does the five-page minimum include the Works Cited page? Thank you, Franklin Falcon This email will enable your instructor to answer the questions quickly and easily, without a lot of back-and-forth. Finally, be sure email is the best way to deal with your issue. Complex discussions might be better in person. If you must use email for more complex issues, be sure to be respectful. If you are upset, for example, save the email as a draft while you cool down. Emails are forever. Remember, if you are struggling in class and need academic support, Learning Center specialists are available to help you in-person or online Monday - Thursday 7:30 - 7:30 and Fridays from 7:30 - 2:00. In addition, NetTutor is available on evenings and weekends. How to understand anythingSpring 2020
Ever walk into a test feeling unsure of what you actually know? Nobel prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman had a solution:
Try to explain the material so that even a kid could understand it. It's as simple as that. To see if you really know something, find a friend, a family member, or someone who owes you money, and, in your own words, tell them all about what you've studied. If they get what you are saying, you probably understand it as well. |
